Mayor Visit to St John's PS

Published: 4th Dec, 2024

Today we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming the lovely, Lilian Seenoi-Barr, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, to our wonderful school community.
As part of a recent, letter writing focus in Year 6, children wrote letters to a wide range of family members and public figures. To much excitement, Holly Y6A and Jared Y6B, were the first children to have replies. Jared received a lovely letter from his very special grandparents. Holly, who invited the Mayor to our school,  was astounded when she received a reply from the Mayor saying that she would love to visit St John's PS.
So, we were absolutely thrilled today to have Mayor Lilian's warm, vivacious company and we gave her a true St John's family welcome!
Our wonderful choir sang for Lilian on arrival, in the assembly hall, where she met Holly's daddy PJ and his partner Eimear, her aunty Nicola and her grandmother Faustina.
Mayor Lilian then visited Mrs Darmody's class where she took part in a Q & A session with the children. She also enjoyed a cup of coffee and Mrs Darmody's legendary homemade scones.
Holly and Mrs Darmody took Mayor Lilian on a tour, around our wonderful school, where she saw our 'Happy Haven' nurture suite in action with Vice-principal, Miss Murphy. Mayor Lilian also had a great conversation with children using our theraputic intervention 'Rainforest Room' about the importance of quiet time and sensory circuit breaks.
Our school family was absolutely delighted to share our teaching and learning with Mayor Lilian and for the opportunity to share the nurturing legacy that has been at the heart of St John's PS for over 50 years. A school at the heart of the community with community as its heart.
